Jumana Al-Waeli is a British Academy Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Ulster University and an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her work focuses on the sociology of education in relation to refugee education, and the political economy of education in conflict-affected settings. Jumana’s research covers multiple contexts, including the UK, Iraq and the Kurdistan region, Lebanon, and Syria. Her current project investigates the educational experiences of young women displaced by ISIS invasion in 2014 in Iraq. Jumana’s doctoral research at UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society (IOE) in London explored the educational experiences of Syrian refugee students in England, using a framework of social and relational justice. She also holds an M.A. in Effective Learning and Teaching from UCL and an MSc in Environment and Sustainability from Damascus University and the University of Poitiers. Jumana has 17 years of experience teaching in higher education and international schools in the UK, the Kurdistan region of Iraq, and Syria.
