In light of the escalating conflict in the Middle East, a decision has been made to postpone the Education, Peace and Equity (EPE) conference until next year.
The conference, which was due to be held in November at Koya University in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), will now be postponed until February as a precautionary measure.
The decision comes in response to impacted flight schedules and growing concerns from international participants and the deteriorating situation across Lebanon, Gaza, and other parts of the region.
In a joint statement issued by the project’s co-founders, Dr Sherko Kirmanj and Professor Kelsey Shanks, the EPP team shared the decision to postpone the event.
“First and foremost, we would like to convey that our thoughts are with everyone affected by the ongoing dire situation in Lebanon, Gaza, and the region,” the co-founders stated. “As we get closer to the date of the EPE2024 conference, we are aware that the recent developments have raised understandable concerns from a number of our international participants.”
The statement further explained that limitations on connectivity and have ruled out the possibility of online participation, therefore postponement was deemed necessary to ensure full participation of all attendees.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and consider the options for ensuring international participation,” the statement added, with a promise of further updates to come.
Participants with immediate concerns or questions are encouraged to reach out to the EPP team via email at EPEIC@koyauniversity.org. The co-founders expressed their gratitude for the patience and understanding of those involved, emphasising their commitment to holding the conference early next year.
We will announce the rescheduled dates in due course.
