Final preparations underway for EPE conference

Published: January 16, 2025

Organisers of the upcoming Education, Peace, and Equity conference, which will be held February 17-18, are pleased to announce that preparations for the event are almost complete.

The event was originally scheduled for November 2024, but due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East, organisers decided to postpone the event as a safety precaution for researchers traveling to the region.

A cadre of international education researchers will visit Koya University next month, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, to attend talks and present findings on education research in conflict-affected countries. Researchers from Syria, Kenya, Algeria, Canada, South Sudan, Lebanon, and many more countries will be participating.

The event is organised by the Education, Peace, and Politics (EPP) network and will showcase much of the work conducted by EPP researchers over the past three years. Researchers will have the chance to exchange ideas, share thoughts, and offer feedback on research conducted.

Central themes of focus for the conference include Methodological Approaches to Education Research in Contexts of Crisis and Conflict, the Role of Higher Education in Conflict and Crisis, and Women and Girls’ Education through a Social Justice Lens, among many more.

Co-founder of the Education, Peace, and Politics project, Dr. Sherko Kirmanj, expressed his excitement for the upcoming conference. He said: “After lots of work behind the scenes, we’re just about ready for next month, and I must say I am very much looking forward to it.

“We have some fascinating discussions planned, and this will serve as a great opportunity to share findings and develop ideas as researchers in the field.”

Co-founder Professor Kelsey Shanks said: “We have been planning this conference for some time and can now confidently say that the event will be a great opportunity for those in the education sector.

“There will no doubt be some fascinating insights from our panels and discussions. Our EPP partner, Koya University, is a great host, and we look forward to welcoming our guests to the Kurdistan region.”
