Funding obtained for educational leadership research

Published: March 8, 2024

EPP member Dr. Nidal Al Haj Sleiman has won a British Academy Bursary through the Centre for Lebanese Studies for a one-year research project (April 23-March 24).

Nidal explained that this funding enabled her to develop her work on critical educational leadership through a social justice lens, particularly in the context of Lebanon.

As part of her project, Nidal delivered a workshop for school leaders in Beirut, at the Centre for Lebanese Studies on February 28, titled Leading Education in Lebanon: Questions of Social Justice amidst Uncertainty and Crises.

The workshop focused on the uncertainty and fragility within the Lebanese political and educational system, and the way it shapes the work of school leaders.

Through discussions and activities, 16 participants explored the notions of social justice education, especially through their leadership roles and analysed their response to injustices and inequalities in their own contexts.

This project relates to Nidal’s research in the wider context of the Middle East, particularly her current research in Iraqi Kurdistan as a part of the EPP network, through which she examines local educational leadership practices, and the policy-leadership dimension as a tenet for social justice and sustainable peace building.
